Northern Kentucky considers landfill expansion amid regional growth projections
Gary W. Moore Judge/Executive | Boone County - KY

The Northern Kentucky Solid Waste Management Area (NKSWMA) is currently evaluating a request to expand landfill capacity in Boone County. The proposed change involves increasing the authorized amount of solid waste disposal by 37.7 million tons, which would bring the total capacity to 48.1 million tons. This adjustment aims to accommodate anticipated growth in Northern Kentucky over the next two decades.

NKSWMA oversees solid waste management for Boone, Kenton, and Campbell counties. The organization coordinates planning for trash and recycling services across these regions. A single landfill site located in southern Boone County currently serves all three counties, accepting non-hazardous waste from both businesses and residents.

The existing Solid Waste Management Plan, last updated in 2023, authorizes a total capacity of just over 11.1 million tons at this facility, with approximately 9.25 million tons already utilized. Amendments to this plan can be made as necessary to address emerging needs.

Public feedback is being sought on the proposed expansion through several channels: emails sent to countyengineer@boonecountyky.org; letters addressed to the Boone County Engineer at PO Box 900, Burlington, KY 41005; or participation in a public hearing scheduled for February 3 at the Boone County Administration Building.

Kentucky state law mandates that all counties establish a solid waste management area and develop plans for managing municipal solid waste generated within their jurisdictions. NKSWMA was formed by Boone, Kenton, and Campbell counties as a collaborative effort to enhance efficiency and reduce costs associated with waste management.

The governing board of NKSWMA includes representatives from each county's administration and solid waste coordination teams:

- Gary W. Moore (Boone County Judge/Executive), Robert Franxman (designee)

- Kris Knochelmann (Kenton County Judge/Executive), Spencer Stork (designee)

- Steve Pendery (Campbell County Judge/Executive), Kim Serra (designee)

Additional members include Jake Buerger (Boone County Solid Waste Coordinator), Melissa Grandstaff (Kenton County Solid Waste Coordinator), and Megan Abrams (Campbell County Solid Waste Coordinator).
