Great Central ShakeOut emphasizes earthquake preparedness in Boone County

Missy Rittinger County Coroner | Boone County - KY

Earthquakes may not be a common occurrence in Boone County, but the proximity to the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ) underscores the importance of preparedness. The NMSZ extends 150 miles through parts of Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, and Tennessee. Residents have previously experienced tremors from this fault line.

Today marks the annual Great Central ShakeOut event. Millions across the region will engage in an earthquake drill at 10:17 am local time. Participants are encouraged to "Drop," "Cover," and "Hold on" during these drills. Those outside should move away from structures and power lines, while drivers are advised to pull over safely until shaking ceases.

While earthquakes pose a minimal threat to Boone County, readiness remains crucial. Securing heavy furniture, creating emergency plans, assembling emergency kits with essentials for three days, and identifying safe spots in homes are recommended steps for preparation.

The initiative aims to educate communities about safety measures during seismic events.
