Golf cart use on county roads requires approval and inspection
Les K. Hill, Sheriff Officer | Boone County - KY

A golf cart can be a convenient way to travel short distances in a neighborhood, but safety and legal requirements must be observed. Boone County residents must follow specific steps to have their streets approved for golf cart use.

First, the street must be designated as an approved roadway for golf carts by the Boone County Fiscal Court. This involves confirming eligibility, completing an application, and obtaining signatures from neighbors. The Traffic Safety Committee reviews applications and makes recommendations to the Fiscal Court, which has the final approval authority.

Once approved, residents need to ensure their golf carts meet state law requirements. These include headlights, taillights, brake lights, turn signals, mirrors, a parking brake, and a horn. Inspections are conducted by the Boone County Sheriff’s Office at designated locations without needing an appointment.

After passing inspection, a permit from the Boone County Building Department is required to operate the golf cart legally. Golf cart drivers must have a valid driver’s license and obey all traffic laws while staying on approved roads.

The Sheriff's Office enforces compliance with these regulations. Violations can result in fines or impoundment of improperly insured golf carts. It's important to note that these rules apply only to county-owned roadways in incorporated Boone County; other areas may have different ordinances regarding golf cart usage.
