The Northern Kentucky Solid Waste Management Area (NKSWMA) is seeking public input on a proposal to expand landfill capacity in Boone County. The regional organization, responsible for overseeing solid waste matters in Boone, Kenton, and Campbell counties, has been asked by the sole solid waste disposal facility in southern Boone County to increase its authorized capacity. This request aims to accommodate projected growth over the next two decades.
The current plan allows for 11.1 million tons of non-hazardous waste disposal, with 9.25 million tons already utilized. The proposed amendment seeks to boost this figure to 48.1 million tons, an increase of more than 37.7 million tons.
Residents and businesses are encouraged to provide feedback via email or letter by January 31 or attend a public hearing on February 3 at the Boone County Administration Building. Comments from these channels will be included in the official record.
NKSWMA's responsibilities include updating the Solid Waste Management Plan every five years or when changes are requested. The plan outlines how waste is collected and disposed of in the region, covering services like curbside collection and recycling programs.
The governing board of NKSWMA includes officials from each county: Gary W. Moore (Boone), Kris Knochelmann (Kenton), Steve Pendery (Campbell), along with designated representatives and solid waste coordinators.
Interested parties can review the current plan online, specifically Section 3-A-4a under review on page six.
